Multi-pet insurance
Insuring more than one dog? Multi-pet insurance simply means getting a discount for covering two or more pets with the same insurer, and most US insurers we've read offer one. The discounts range from 5% to 10%, and the small print matters: some take the discount off every pet's policy, while others only take it off the second pet onwards. Here's what each insurer says, and a quick way to see what it could save you.
How much could a multi-pet discount save you?
Put in how many dogs you're insuring and the monthly price you've been quoted for each one. The chart shows the most each insurer's discount could take off a year's cover. It's a guide to the discount only, not a quote: each insurer prices your dogs differently.
We've started with an example of $50 a month per dog. Change it to your own quote.
"Up to" because some insurers don't say whether the discount applies to your first pet as well; we've assumed it does unless they say otherwise. First-year discounts may not carry on after renewal. One insurer we checked give no multi-pet discount, so they aren't on the chart.

Your questions answered
Can I put two dogs on one pet insurance policy?
Usually each dog has its own policy, priced for that dog, with the discount applied to each one. Lemonade, for example, says it needs a separate policy for every pet, and gives the multi-pet discount once you have more than one.
Is a multi-pet discount always worth it?
It's a nice saving, but it shouldn't be the only thing you compare. The cover matters more: the waiting periods, how pre-existing conditions are treated and what's excluded can make a much bigger difference than 5% or 10% off. Trupanion, for instance, gives no multi-pet discount at all and says it keeps one price for everyone instead.
Do I get the discount if I add a dog later?
Usually yes. Lemonade applies it to both policies as soon as you buy the second, and refunds the difference on the first. Nationwide applies it to a pet who is already insured from that pet's next renewal.
Every discount is from the insurer's own website, read on 5 October 2026; each insurer's page links to the exact page. Discounts change and can depend on your state, so check before you buy.
