How do you survive the first night with a new puppy?

okay so i'm not even the one doing this but my friend just texted me in full panic mode because she picked up her 9 week old golden mix today and tonight is... not going well lol. crying, won't settle, the whole thing.

from what i've seen with fosters (and tbh juno was a nightmare her first week with me), a few things that actually help: a ticking clock wrapped in a blanket near the crate to mimic littermate heartbeats, a worn t-shirt from you so they can smell you, keeping the crate in your bedroom at least the first few nights. lowkey this is more common than ppl think, like the 'my puppy is broken' panic is basically a rite of passage.

ngl the exhaustion is real and it does get better, usually faster than you'd expect.

but what actually worked for you guys on night one? especially anything that helped them settle faster in the crate?
