Why does my dog eat grass every single morning?
So I have been observing this with Greta lately, she goes out first thing and immediately starts grazing like a small cow. Every morning, very deliberate, not frantic. She is not vomiting afterwards, seems perfectly normal otherwise.
I know the usual thing people say is 'dogs eat grass when their stomach is upset' but in my experience with the breed, Schnauzers can be quite routine-oriented and also quite... opinionated about what they want to do. So I genuinely cannot tell if this is a digestive thing or just a habit she has decided to have.
I did some searching and got the usual mix of 'totally fine' and 'could be a sign of something.' Not very helpful.
Has anyone here seen consistent morning grass eating in their dog, and did you ever find a clear reason for it? Did you change anything, diet or routine, and did it stop? Curious whether this is worth a vet conversation or if I am overthinking it.
Sunny does this too, not every morning but enough that I asked our vet about it. She basically shrugged and said some dogs just like grass, especially if it's dewy and cool in the morning. The no vomiting part is probably the key thing she'd want to hear. If Greta seems fine otherwise I'd maybe just mention it at the next regular checkup rather than making a special trip.
Bento went through a grass phase around age two, very consistent, very deliberate, no upset stomach. My vet's take was pretty similar to Eddie's vet, basically that some dogs seem to graze out of habit or just because they like it, and the no-vomiting detail matters a lot. She did mention fiber intake as a possible factor worth considering if it's really consistent. Did Greta's diet change around when this started?
Yuki's fiber point is worth following up on. Loki went through something similar and the first thing I looked at was whether anything in the routine had shifted, timing of meals, food swap, anything. The deliberate/calm grazing vs frantic eating distinction matters too. Frantic I'd push for a vet visit sooner, but what you're describing sounds more like she's just decided that's part of her morning.
