Your vet fee limit refreshes every year you renew, so if your dog develops a condition that needs treatment for the rest of their life, it can keep being covered. How does lifetime cover compare with other types?

Imagine your dog is diagnosed with arthritis, which needs treatment for the rest of their life. Here's what each type of policy would pay for, year by year.

YearLifetimeTime limitedMaximum benefitAccident only
Year 1: diagnosedCovered, up to your yearly limitCovered, up to the limitCovered, up to the total limit for the conditionNot covered: arthritis is an illness

What is accident only pet insurance?

Accident only pet insurance pays for vet treatment after an accident, such as a broken leg or a swallowed sock, but never for an illness. It's the most basic kind of cover. Here's how Animal Friends' accident only policy works, from its own policy booklet:

Your questions answered

What does lifetime pet insurance mean?

It means your vet fee limit refreshes every time you renew. So if your dog develops a long-term condition such as arthritis or diabetes, you can keep claiming for it year after year, as long as you renew without a break.

What is time limited pet insurance?

Each condition is covered for a set time, usually 12 months from the first treatment, up to a set amount. Once that time is up, the condition isn't covered any more, even if your dog still needs treatment. It can work well for one-off accidents and illnesses, but less so for anything ongoing.

What is maximum benefit pet insurance?

Each condition has a total limit but no time limit. You can keep claiming for a condition until you reach that amount, and after that it isn't covered again. Direct Line Advanced works this way, with £8,000 per condition.

What is accident only pet insurance?

It pays for vet treatment after an accident, such as a broken leg or a swallowed sock, but not for any illness. Animal Friends' accident only policy, for example, pays up to £2,500 per accident each policy year. It's the most basic kind of cover, so it's worth being clear about what it leaves out.
