Third party liability insurance for dogs

Third party liability insurance for dogs protects you if your dog injures someone or damages their property and you're held legally responsible. It pays the compensation and the legal costs, so you're not facing that bill on your own. The good news is that most UK dog insurance policies already include it, but the limit, the excess and the small print vary from one insurer to the next.

What does third party liability cover?

If your dog injures someone, or damages their property, and you're held legally responsible, it pays the compensation and the legal costs. It's sometimes called public liability or legal liability.

Your questions answered

Is third party liability included in pet insurance?

In most UK dog policies we read, yes. It's included for dogs only, usually with a £250 excess per claim. It's worth checking that it hasn't been removed from your dog's cover, because some insurers can limit or remove it, for example after a bite.

Is public liability insurance for dogs the same as third party liability?

For dog owners, they mean the same thing: cover if your dog injures someone or damages their property and you're legally responsible. Insurers simply use different names for it, such as "legal liability" or "legal claims against you".

What isn't covered by third party liability for dogs?

The most common exclusions in the policies we read are claims made by your family or the people you live with, incidents while a paid sitter or walker is looking after your dog, incidents abroad, and repeat incidents caused by aggression your dog has shown before.
