Dog grooming insurance
Dog grooming insurance protects your business when a groom goes wrong. As well as general liability for injury or damage to other people, groomers need professional liability, which covers mistakes in the grooming itself, and cover for the dogs on your table (animal bailee). Here's how one groomer policy sets it out, from salon to mobile groomers.
If something goes wrong at a groom, which part of the policy pays?
Find what happened in the left-hand column to see which part of a dog walking policy responds, and what it pays.
| What happened | The part of the policy that pays | What it pays |
|---|---|---|
| A client trips over a hose in your salon | General liability | $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 a year in Pet Care Insurance's policy. |
| A client says your grooming work caused a problem | Professional liability | Errors and omissions in your grooming operations, $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 a year. It comes with the grooming endorsement. |
| A dog is hurt during the groom and it's your fault | Animal bailee (care, custody or control) | Included in the base policy at $2,500 per occurrence and $5,000 a year, with options up to $15,000 per occurrence. |
| A dog is hurt and nobody is at fault | Vet bill reimbursement | Pays vet bills regardless of fault: $1,000 per occurrence and $2,500 a year, or $5,000 a year as an option. |
| You lose a client's keys on a home visit | Lost key coverage | $2,000 per occurrence and $2,000 a year. |
From Pet Care Insurance's pet groomer insurance guide (2023), read in October 2026. The US providers we found don't publish a sample policy, so this is one provider's summary of its own cover.
What isn't covered?
- Boarding more than four animals overnight.
- Guard or attack dog training, breeding or landscaping: Pet Care Insurance won't insure businesses that offer them.
- Animal bailee cover only pays if you're at fault; vet bill reimbursement covers the rest.
Your questions answered
What is professional liability for dog groomers?
It covers claims that your grooming work itself went wrong, the errors and omissions in your grooming operations. General liability alone covers injury or damage to other people, not the quality of your work, which is why groomers need both.
Can I keep dogs overnight on groomer insurance?
With Pet Care Insurance, yes, up to four animals overnight, for when an owner can’t collect their dog the same day. Keeping more than four overnight counts as boarding, which this policy doesn’t cover.
