Guide

How to choose a dog trainer in Texas

What the 498 trainers listed in Texas offer, how to check them, and what to ask before you book.

What training methods do dog trainers in Texas use?

Of the 498 trainers listed in Texas, 143 say they train force-free, 53 balanced, 17 e-collar-centric, and 285 don’t say how they train.

It’s worth knowing a trainer’s method before you book, rather than finding out in the first session. Every trainer on this page carries one of four labels, and nobody is hidden because of their method:

Force-free
Rewards and positive reinforcement, with no aversive tools such as prong, choke or shock collars.
Balanced
Rewards combined with corrections when a dog gets something wrong.
E-collar-centric
Training built around an electronic collar.
Not stated
The listing doesn’t say, and we couldn’t check it yet.

If a trainer’s method isn’t stated, ask them what happens when a dog gets something wrong. Their answer will tell you more than any label.

How do you check a dog trainer’s qualifications in Texas?

Texas doesn’t license dog trainers, so look for an independent credential instead. 38 of the 498 trainers listed here name one on their listing.

A credential doesn’t guarantee a good trainer, but it means someone outside their business has tested what they know. That’s why credentials make up a quarter of the Bark Score.

The credentials held by trainers in Texas:

CPDT-KA (33 trainers)
Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge Assessed, from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). Passed an independent exam on training and behaviour, after logging hours of training experience. Kept up with continuing education.
CBCC-KA (8 trainers)
Certified Behavior Consultant Canine, Knowledge Assessed, from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). Passed an exam focused on behaviour problems such as fear, aggression and anxiety, after logging hours of behaviour consulting.
KPA-CTP (3 trainers)
Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner, from the Karen Pryor Academy. Completed the academy’s dog trainer programme, which teaches reward-based training, and passed its practical assessments.
CPDT-KSA (1 trainer)
Certified Professional Dog Trainer, Knowledge and Skills Assessed, from the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers (CCPDT). As the CPDT-KA, plus a hands-on assessment of their training skills.
IAABC-ADT (1 trainer)
Accredited Dog Trainer, from the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC). Accredited by IAABC after a review of their training knowledge and case work.

Private lessons, group classes or board and train: which suits your dog?

It depends on the problem and on how much time you can give it. In Texas, private lessons are offered by 284 trainers, and group classes by 201.

Private lessons (284 trainers)
One to one with the trainer, so the whole session goes on your dog’s problem. A good fit for a specific issue, or a dog who can’t cope around other dogs yet.
Group classes (201 trainers)
A class with other dogs and owners. Your dog learns to listen around distractions, though each dog gets less of the trainer’s time.
Board and train (190 trainers)
Your dog stays with the trainer for a set time and is trained for you. Ask how they will hand the skills over, because a dog who listens to the trainer won’t automatically listen to you at home.
Online (67 trainers)
Sessions by video call. Handy for puppy questions and coaching you between visits, harder for problems a trainer needs to see in person.
In your home (62 trainers)
The trainer comes to you, so you work on problems where they happen: at the front door, in the yard or on your usual walk.
Day training (45 trainers)
You drop your dog off and pick them up the same day, with the trainer working with them in between. Ask how many handover sessions with you are included.

Whichever you choose, the training only sticks if you practise between sessions, so ask what you’ll need to do at home and how long it should take each day.

What can a dog trainer in Texas help with?

382 of the 498 trainers listed in Texas help with basic obedience, 279 with recall and 255 with puppy training.

Fewer take on behaviour problems: 78 list reactivity, 77 list aggression, 43 list fear and 46 list separation anxiety. 8 hold a behaviour credential (CBCC-KA or IAABC-CDBC), which means they’ve been tested on exactly this kind of work.

If the behaviour is new, or your dog has started growling, snapping or hiding, see your vet before you book a trainer. Pain and illness can cause behaviour changes, and a good trainer will ask about it anyway.

What should you ask a dog trainer before you book?

Ask these before you pay for anything. A good trainer will be happy to answer all of them.

  1. How do you train, and what happens when a dog gets something wrong?
  2. What training or credentials do you have?
  3. Have you worked with dogs like mine, with this problem?
  4. What does it cost, and how many sessions are included?
  5. What will I need to practise between sessions?
  6. What support do I get once the sessions are over?
The law

Texas dog laws to know before you train

Taken from the official text, which each answer links to. Checked on October 19, 2026. Your city or county can add its own rules, so check with your local animal services too.

Do dog trainers need a license in Texas?

No. Texas doesn’t license dog trainers, so anyone can call themselves one.

Dog training isn’t on the list of jobs the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation licenses (it licenses dog and cat breeders, not trainers). That makes a trainer’s credentials, and what other owners say about them, the best checks you have.

Does my dog need a rabies shot in Texas?

Yes. Texas law says your dog must be vaccinated against rabies by the time they’re four months old, and again at the intervals the state sets.

The shot must be given by a licensed veterinarian, who gives you a certificate. Keep it handy, as trainers who run group classes or board and train may ask to see it. The Texas Department of State Health Services notes that your city or county can require boosters more often.

Source: Texas Health and Safety Code, section 826.021, DSHS: rabies

Do I need to register my dog in Texas?

It depends on where you live: Texas lets each city and county decide whether dogs must be registered.

Where registration is required, a dog can only be registered once it has had its rabies shot. Your city or county animal services can tell you the rules and the fee.

Source: Texas Health and Safety Code, section 826.031

What happens if my dog is declared dangerous in Texas?

You have 30 days to register the dog with animal control, keep it on a leash or in a locked enclosure, and carry at least $100,000 of liability insurance (or show you could cover that much).

Under Texas law a dog can be declared dangerous after an unprovoked attack that injures someone, or unprovoked acts that make a person reasonably believe it will attack, outside its enclosure. If your dog lunges at or snaps at people, it’s worth working with a trainer who helps with aggression before it gets that far.

Source: Texas Health and Safety Code, sections 822.041 and 822.042

Is it legal to chain a dog outside in Texas?

No. Since January 2022 you can’t leave a dog outside alone on a chain, and any tether must be at least 10 feet long or five times the dog’s length, whichever is longer.

A dog left tethered outside must also have shelter, shade, drinkable water and somewhere dry to stand, and the collar or harness must fit properly. If your dog has to be tied up because they jump fences or dig out, that is a good problem to bring to a trainer.
