IAABC credentials for dog trainers

IAABC stands for the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants. For dog professionals it offers two credentials: the Accredited Dog Trainer (ADT) and the Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC). Here is what each one means and how trainers earn them, plus the trainers in our directory who list them.

What is the IAABC?

The IAABC is a membership association for animal behavior professionals that awards its own credentials through exams. Trainers must first join as members, then apply for a credential through their member account.

What is an IAABC Accredited Dog Trainer (ADT)?

The ADT is the IAABC’s credential for dog trainers. At the time of writing, the IAABC recommends at least 2 years of professional dog training or shelter experience and 100 hours of education before applying, and the application fee is $225.

What is an IAABC Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC)?

The CDBC is the IAABC’s credential for dog behavior work, such as fear, anxiety and aggression. At the time of writing, the IAABC recommends at least 3 years of relevant experience and 400 hours of education, and the exam includes questions and case studies that reflect real behavior consulting. The fee is $225.

How do trainers keep an IAABC credential?

Credentialed members need 36 continuing education units every 3 years for each credential they hold.

Which should you look for, ADT or CDBC?

For everyday training, such as manners, leash walking or recall, an ADT shows the trainer has been assessed on training. For a behavior problem, such as reactivity, fear or aggression, a CDBC shows they have been assessed on behavior consulting specifically. Either way, ask how they train: every trainer on Barklopedia has their methods labelled.

How can you check a trainer holds the IAABC?

Ask the trainer, and check with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) if you want to be sure.

The credentials on Barklopedia come from what trainers publish themselves. We haven’t confirmed each one with the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), so it’s worth checking before you book.
