So my brother-in-law just moved into an apartment in Chicago and wants a dog but keeps getting told he has to get a tiny dog or forget about it. He asked me for advice because we have Sunny and I immediately realized I have no idea what I'm talking about for apartment situations.

Sunny needs a yard. Sunny needs like three yards honestly.

But I've been doing some reading and it sounds like energy level matters more than size? Like some bigger breeds are actually pretty chill indoors? I've seen bulldogs and greyhounds come up a lot which surprised me on the greyhound front.

He has no kids, works from home, can do walks but doesn't want a dog that will destroy the place if he leaves for two hours. Budget is normal person budget.

Anyone have experience with a medium or bigger dog in an apartment that actually went well? What breed and what made it work?

Energy level over size is exactly right, you got there on your own. Greyhound rec is solid, they're couch potatoes most of the day as long as they get a good run. Basset hounds, adult mastiffs, even some adult labs if they're on the calmer end. Key word being adult. A puppy of ANY breed will wreck an apartment, doesn't matter how chill the breed is supposed to be. What's his daily schedule actually look like? Working from home helps a ton but is he doing calls all day or is he pretty free to step out? That changes my answer a bit.
