What Is the Bark Score?
The Bark Score is Barklopedia’s independent rating framework for evaluating dog trainers and behavior professionals. It was designed to help owners identify trustworthy, ethical, and skilled trainers, not just the most reviewed.
Each Bark Score is calculated using objective, verifiable data, rather than just subjective reviews.
We focus on professional standards, training ethics, and real-world reputation.
What we measure (the four pillars)
Each listing is assessed on four 0–5 subscores:
- Reputation
Reflects public reputation using Google Business Profiles (average star rating weighted by review volume). - Ethics
Reflects training approach. Force-free/positive reinforcement receives the highest score. “Balanced” is neutral/moderate. E-collar-centric approaches score low. - Credentials
Recognized credentials (e.g., CPDT-KA, KPA-CTP, IAABC, IMDT, etc.) significantly increase this subscore. Any verifiable credential boosts it. - Service Breadth
Range of programs and specializations offered (e.g., puppy, reactivity, service/therapy, recall, leash skills, etc.).
We do not host or factor third party user-generated reviews. Reputation is derived from public sources and used only as a numeric signal.
Exact Bark Score calculation
We normalize each pillar to 0–5, then compute the final score with these weights:
Bark Score =
0.30 × Reputation + 0.40 × Ethics + 0.25 × Credentials + 0.05 × Service Breadth
Tiers (how we label high performers)
We map the final Bark Score to a public tier:
- 4.75 – 5.00: Platinum Certified Trainer
- 4.25 – 4.74: Gold Rated Trainer
- 3.75 – 4.24: Silver Rated Trainer
- 3.00 – 3.74: Listed Trainer
- Below 3.00: Listed with limited data (insufficient verified signals for a higher tier)
Why it matters
- Prioritizes humane, science-based methods.
- Rewards verifiable credentials.
- Keeps the system consistent across regions and trainer types.
- Gives owners a fast, trustworthy snapshot without hosting UGC.
Updates & verification
We periodically review the model. Trainers can submit updates or credentials for verification via our Trainer Update process; verified items immediately reflect in subscores.
